But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
The concept of peace is frequently discussed, as reflected in expressions such as "world peace" or "maintaining peace." However, the precise definition of peace warrants further examination.
Jesus said in John 14:27 that He left His peace with us. “Peace, I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.”
This discussion addresses the concept of the fruit of peace, distinguishing it from forms of worldly tranquility. Although numerous factors may lead to temporary calmness, enduring and authentic peace is attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. The following explores the significance of the fruit of peace.
Peace in the Greek
The Meaning of "Eiréné" in Galatians 5:22
The term for "peace" in Galatians 5:22 is the Greek word eiréné, which occurs ninety-two times across the New Testament. This noun, derived from the verb eiro ("to join"), encompasses notions of peace and prosperity. As noted in the New Testament Greek Lexicon, Eirene refers to various contexts: national tranquility, harmonious relationships between individuals, security, and salvation.
Additional scriptural references featuring eiréné (peace) include:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14).
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).
The Depth and Dimensions of Peace
Peace represents a substantive theological principle. This discussion provides an introductory overview, concentrating on three primary manifestations of peace: tranquility, security, and reconciliation.
Tranquility
Individuals of faith may cultivate a genuine sense of tranquility within their lives. Such tranquility is most evident when adherents of Christ prioritize living by the guidance of the Spirit rather than succumbing to worldly inclinations. Their communication and decision-making are indicative of a peaceful disposition, illustrating that a life directed by the Spirit naturally fosters peacemaking tendencies.
It is crucial to distinguish between the roles of "peacekeeper" and "peacemaker." Attaining tranquility does not imply a constant state of relaxation or immunity from adversity and conflict. Rather, tranquility is best understood as a state of assured rest, firmly anchored in one’s identity in Christ. With this foundation, believers can consistently access inner peace and rely upon the peace offered by Jesus in all circumstances.
Understanding Tranquility
To be tranquil is to experience a state in which the mind or spirit is free from agitation. Tranquility is characterized by an absence of disturbance or turmoil, allowing for a steady and stable disposition. This condition is not simply the lack of external chaos, but rather a deep, inner calmness that persists regardless of outside circumstances. When tranquility is present, the heart and mind are settled, and there is a consistent assurance that remains even in the face of potential adversity.
2 Corinthians 3:17 says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
Freedom in the Spirit
Jesus has set all believers free in Him. This freedom is not simply a release from external troubles, but a liberation of the heart and mind. Through Jesus, His Spirit comes to dwell within us, and it is this indwelling Spirit that leads us into true freedom. The work of the Spirit in the life of a believer produces the fruit of peace—a deep and abiding sense of tranquility that does not depend on circumstances.
When the Spirit resides in our hearts, we are no longer bound by agitation or disturbance. The worries and anxieties that might otherwise overwhelm us lose their power, because the peace of Christ reigns within. Importantly, this does not mean that the life of a believer is always quiet or without challenges. Instead, the distinguishing mark of a believer’s life is the stability and rest found in the Savior. Even amid chaos or difficulty, the presence of a believer should reflect the steadfastness and calm that comes from knowing Jesus and living by His Spirit.
Security
This leads us into security. Have you ever been around someone insecure in their relationship? Have you ever been the person who was insecure in a relationship? It’s not a pretty sight. It is exhausting, unpredictable, and messy. There is a lack of confidence and trust. We were not secure the moment Adam and Eve sinned in the garden. Our confident relationship with God was compromised by our own disobedience. This led to wobbly territory.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 27:24).
Jesus the Rock and the Fruit of the Kingdom
Jesus refers to Himself as the Rock in Matthew 21:42-43, declaring that the kingdom of God will be entrusted to people who are committed to producing its fruit. This is a significant moment, as Jesus explains His role as the Cornerstone—a foundation upon which everything else is built. By identifying Himself as the Cornerstone, He emphasizes the importance of a solid foundation in the kingdom, one that is secure and reliable.
After sharing His identity as the Cornerstone, Jesus reveals that He will give the kingdom to those who are fruitful, highlighting that true belonging in His kingdom is marked by spiritual productivity. This fruitfulness is not achieved through human effort alone; rather, it is made possible through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit secures the lives of all believers in Jesus, ensuring that they are rooted firmly in Him. Because of this security, believers are empowered to produce the fruit that Jesus desires, reflecting His character and bringing glory to God.
Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers experience the assurance and stability that come from being anchored in Christ, the Rock. This foundation enables them to grow and bear fruit, fulfilling the purpose and calling that Jesus has placed upon their lives.
Romans 1:16 tells us, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”
The Source and Challenge of Peace
We can experience true peace through the power of the cross and the resurrection of Jesus. His sacrifice and victory over death assure us of a restored relationship with God and grant us peace that is not based on external circumstances. In addition, we find peace in the assurance of our eternal home in Heaven, knowing that our future is secure in God’s promise. This confidence is further strengthened by the sealing of the Holy Spirit, who is given to us as a downpayment for what is to come, as described in Ephesians 1:14-16.
Despite these profound sources of peace, there are times when we fail to live in this peace because we lack a sense of security. For example, consider nations that do not trust one another—their instability breeds rumors of war and unrest. Similarly, companies with questionable leadership often create environments of uncertainty, leading to whispers about layoffs and job insecurity. On a more personal level, think of a young child tightly gripping a parent’s hand while walking, holding on out of fear of falling. In all these scenarios, the absence of trust and security results in anxiety and instability, making it difficult to experience or reflect the peace that Jesus offers.
The Shoes of Peace and Reconciliation
Ephesians 6:15 references the "shoes of peace" as part of the armor of God. This metaphor illustrates that individuals are not only called to experience rest in their relationship with Christ, but also to advance proactively, led by His peace. The concept of walking implies ongoing progress and purposeful direction. A secure understanding of one's identity as a child of God enables empowerment through the Spirit to consistently pursue peace regardless of external circumstances.
Reconciliation Through Christ
Our sin separated us from God, who is perfectly holy, while we are not. Because of our sinfulness, we desperately need a Savior who can reconcile us to God. Only God Himself could accomplish this by taking on the form of a man, living a sinless life, and dying in our place, as described in Philippians 2:7. Jesus is the one true Mediator between us and God, as stated in 1 Timothy 2:5.
The Impact of Reconciliation
Broken relationships often leave us feeling shattered, unstable, lost, or deeply hurt. When reconciliation takes place, it brings restoration and reunites what was divided. To reconcile is to reconnect—to mend what was broken and restore wholeness. In our relationship with God, reconciliation through Jesus is the source of peace and security that sustains us each day.
If you do not have peace in your life and you have never personally accepted Jesus’ gift of salvation, then you do not have reconciliation with the Lord. You lack peace in your life because the fruit of peace stems from reconciliation with God.
Take a moment right now. Stop reading and tell Jesus that you have sinned against Him. Ask Jesus to forgive you for your sins and tell Him that you accept Him as Savior for your life. Ask Him to come into your heart and thank Him for His free gift of salvation and eternal life in heaven. If you prayed that prayer, please tell someone in your life who is a believer in Jesus. They can celebrate and begin this journey of new life with you!
If you follow Jesus, remember His covenant with us—we did nothing to earn reconciliation; He gave us His righteousness.
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
Struggles with Peace and the Enemy's Tactics
Having the Holy Spirit does not mean that believers are immune to struggles with fear or anxiety. If you find yourself battling for peace, know that you are not alone. Throughout Biblical history, many who deeply loved God still wrestled with attacks from the enemy, biological tendencies, and stressful circumstances. Even in their struggles, the Lord continued to love them, use them for His purposes, and minister to them. He empowered them to be overcomers, demonstrating His faithfulness and care regardless of their challenges.
If you sense that the fruit of peace is lacking in your life, consider the nature of the enemy. From the very beginning, the enemy has sought to steal the fruit God intends for His people. Reflecting on the garden of Eden, Satan aimed to disrupt the relationship of peace by persuading the woman to take and eat the forbidden fruit with her husband. In the same way that he tried to steal fruit then, Satan continues to attempt to steal your peace today. He tries to convince you with lies that you are not tranquil, secure, or reconciled. Yet, Jesus assures you that you are all of these things.
Peace is a beautiful and complex fruit that is produced by the Holy Spirit. We have access to it every moment of every day. Our salvation is secure. Our souls can rest in our great God. May He fill you up with His peace today and always.

St Francis of Assisi's Peace Prayer
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Powerful Peace
Lord, I thank You for placing Your wonderful, powerful, protective peace in my life. I am grateful that You have positioned it to stand at the entrance of my heart and mind and that it dominates my mind and controls my life. Because what is inside me is what rules me, I choose to let this peace rise up and conquer me. Thank You for loving me enough to put this powerful peace in my life! I pray this in Jesus' name!
I confess that I am guarded and protected by the powerful peace of God that works in my life. It rises up to dominate my mind; it controls my thinking, and it determines the condition of my life and the environment where I live and work. I am unaffected by the circumstances surrounding me, for this supernatural peace stands at the gate of my mind and emotions to monitor everything that tries to access me. Because no fretting, anxiety, panic, or worry is allowed to enter me, I remain free, calm, and peaceful - even in difficult situations that in the past would have upset me! Pope Francis' Prayer for Peace
Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!
The Futility of Human Efforts in Achieving Peace
Throughout history, we have repeatedly attempted to resolve our conflicts through our own abilities and by resorting to the use of force. These efforts have spanned many years, yet time and again, they have led us into periods marked by hostility and darkness. The consequences have been tragic: the shedding of blood, the devastation of countless lives, and the loss of hope for many. Despite all these attempts, our endeavors to establish true peace have ultimately proven to be in vain.
Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.
Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness.
Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!
Amen. (source:USCCB.org)
